On Friday 13th October, 2017, the Paul Canoville Foundation in association with Street Cred Productions will be celebrating the achievement of some of ‘football’s firsts’. It will be an evening where we recognise the positive contributions of some former pioneering black professional football players. The event has been planned to coincide in honour of the nationally recognised Black History Month.
Paul Canoville, Howard Gayle, Ricky Hill, Pat Nevin, John Barnes, Les Ferdinand, Ian Wright, Paul Elliot and Chris Ramsey will form the panel on the night.
In addition to discussing the challenges and progress made regarding equality in the game, we will also be addressing issues around mental health. The recent well documented problems faced by footballers Aaron Lennon and Clarke Carlisle have thrown up necessary questions regarding the pressures that can sometimes accompany ‘the beautiful game’. Many former players agree that 50% of the game is played in the mind, therefore the more we discuss it, the less taboo the topic should become.
Guests will be encouraged to ask the former players questions to gain a deeper understanding of the magnitude of what these players have achieved throughout their careers. The discussion, video clips and opportunity to interact with the former players will make this a night educational and memorable. The evening will be hosted by former Capital Xtra and BBC Radio London presenter Geoff Schuman.
The event will be held in the prestigious Grand Hall, Hammersmith Town Hall, King Street, Hammersmith, London, W6 9JU.
Hammersmith and Fulham Council have recognised the importance of this event and agreed to partner up with the Paul Canoville Foundation by providing the venue and including the event within their Black History promotional timeline. In 2005 Hammersmith and Fulham Council assisted with a similar event in partnership with BBC Radio London and Street Cred Promotions. The council is delighted to offer their support again.
